Product Description

Some tips for growing bitter gourd (also known as bitter melon) from seeds: 1. Timing: Bitter gourd is a warm-season crop, so plant seeds when the soil has warmed up and temperatures are consistently above 60°F (15°C). In cooler climates, you can start seeds indoors a few weeks and transplant them outdoors once the weather warms up. 2. Location: Choose a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil for planting bitter gourd. Ensure the location receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. 3. Soil Preparation: Prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of at least 12 inches and removing any rocks, weeds, or debris. Bitter gourd prefers slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.0-6.5. Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage. 4. Seed Planting: Plant bitter gourd seeds directly into the soil, spacing them 12-18 inches apart in rows spaced 3-6 feet apart. Plant the seeds 1 inch deep and cover them lightly with soil. 5. Support Structure: Bitter gourd is a vining plant that requires support to grow. Install trellises, stakes, or a sturdy support structure before planting to provide support for the vines as they grow. 6. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plants deeply once or twice a week, depending on rainfall and temperature. Bitter gourd has shallow roots, so frequent watering is essential, especially during hot, dry weather. 7. Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as straw or shredded leaves, around the plants to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain a more consistent soil temperature. 8. Fertilizing: Bitter gourd plants are heavy feeders and benefit from regular fertilization. Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost tea every 3-4 weeks during the growing season to promote healthy growth and fruit production. 9. Training and Pruning: As the bitter gourd vines grow, gently guide them onto the support structure to encourage upward growth. Prune away any dead or diseased foliage to promote air circulation and reduce the risk of disease. 10. Harvesting: Bitter gourds are typically ready to harvest 60-90 days after planting, depending on the variety. Harvest them when they are young and tender, usually about 4-6 inches long. Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the gourds from the vine, taking care not to damage the plant. By following these tips, you should be able to grow healthy and productive bitter gourd plants in your garden! ...Read More
